PARENT SUPPORT GROUP
Mission Statement
Parent Support Group (PSG) is structured to promote openness and trust among parents, to discuss current and relevant parenting topics, issues, and concerns and to provide immediate mechanism for feedback, action planning, and follow up. Some faculty members, often Principal, attend PSG Meetings to provide a liaison between parents and the school. They are also present in a supportive rate, to answer school related questions and assist facilitators as needed. Meetings are usually scheduled monthly for two hours. Sometimes school may respond by seeking additional feedback from parents or by calling for a special meeting outside of a regular PSG meeting. School shares general summaries of all PSG meetings with appropriate faculty and administrators so that staff is aware of parenting interests, issues, and concerns.
Goal
PSG begins a process –a means of building stronger communication links between parents, students, and school. To keep parents and school better communicate about strategies for raising healthy children and improve parental involvement in education.
PSG meetings are encouraging reassuring solution oriented and a lot of fun. Parents leave feeling more confident and better equipped to meet the challenge of raising healthy successful children. When we collaborate with others, we create new meaning and improve our understanding of life. Learning to collaborate in a parent school community is not much different than learning to collaborate in any organization. Collaboration is not only the core stone of PSG, it is also the corner stone of the parent-child relationship. The child feels valued and remains attached to the parent throughout the adolescent years, when a child feels this attachment to a parent, he or she is more likely to adopt parental values and less likely to engage in risky or unsafe behavior.
